So this is pretty much a filler post, since real life has been getting in the way of my blogging life recently. I still have two Project Terrible to watch (though I will probably have time for one tonight - FINALLY) so I'm going to miss the July deadline. Sue me.
Anyway, this is something I've been wanting to put out there to all the bloggers for a while, simply for my own curiosity. On a recent post I did for the Liebster Blog Award, this was one of the questions I asked of the people receiving the award from me. It looks like Craig at Let's Get Out of Here! is going to be the only one answering that question, although I already had kind of an idea of how he came up with his blog name!
So here's my question for anybody that wants to answer: How did you come up with or where did you get the idea for the name of your blog? And, as a follow-up, are you still happy with that choice now?
I guess I'll answer the question, too. I started my blog not really thinking that anything would come out of it or that I would keep up with it, so I came up with the title pretty quickly and didn't really have any other options. I knew I was going to be writing about horror, and I also wanted any readers to know that I was a female - because I guess it still surprises some people that girls actually watch horror movies. So then the question was, what title will convey that this will be a site about horror movies, written by a girl? The Girl Who Loves Horror. Easy, breezy, beautiful.
Am I still happy with that hasty choice now? I used to wish that I had taken more time to come up with something more witty or clever, like a fun play on words or something, but I love the title now. It looks good up there on my blog banner, rolls off the tongue nice, and of course, conveys that I am a girl who loves horror movies and loves writing about them. I think I'm going to keep it.
So please leave a comment and share with me and the rest of the blogging community how you decided on the name for your blog and if you still like it now. Inquiring minds want to know!
I came up with "From The Depths of DVD Hell" purely from how I describe most of the films I tend to watch, as frequently they are that far off the general movie goers radar.
ReplyDeleteI still love it now, especially for how fun it sounds when mentioned in conversation and also because it doesn't tie me to anyone genre which is always handy.
I love your name, Elwood, because I immediately understand what your blog is about upon reading it. And yes, it is very fun sounding and I'm sure sparks interest and conversation about your blog.
DeletePersonally, I think "The Girl Who Loves Horror" is a great title for a blog: simple, catchy, and completely descriptive.
ReplyDeleteI'd say the same for "From the Depths of DVD Hell," too.
I liked mine ("Ramblings of a Honk Mahfah") for a while, because I assumed it made other Stephen King fans chuckle. Turns out, it's a kinda obscure King reference, even among King fans. Once I figured that out, I started to hate it so much that I decided to just start over.
So, I settled on "The Truth Inside the Lie." This is also a King reference -- it's from a quote King placed on the dedication page to "It" -- so it might not immediately say what I want it to say, but I solved that by simply placing the quotation beneath the blog's banner. Hopefully, it works!
Yeah, I had no idea what a Honk Mahfah was either! But I haven't read any of the Dark Tower books yet so that's my excuse. I love the new title, though, I think it'll give you a lot of freedom to talk about what you really want.
DeleteI never really knew what in the hell to call my blog. I chose a generic address like Eerie Eriks Reviews, thinking basically, I'm going to review some stuff or whatever. It was Ramen, Robots and Red Sauce first, and I changed it to Horror Movies and Beer for now... perhaps later I'll change the logo once again. But it'll still have my name and the fact that I "review" stuff in the main address I guess. I figure I should be able to call it whatever I want. Meh.
ReplyDeleteRamen, Robots and Red Sauce was great, that was one of my favorite blog titles and one that made me wish I had been more clever with mine!
Delete"Cross-Up" is a term that's seen a lot of use in fighting games. In a nutshell, it's a move that, depending on your positioning, requires your enemy to block in the opposite direction than they normally would. It's a useful technique that's useful for effective surprise attacks and mounting an offense...buuuuuuuuut it's also a move that puts you at risk and makes you look silly.
ReplyDeleteIt seemed eerily apropos for me. I don't know if what I do will actually work, but I figure it's worth a shot -- and I just might be able to get something out of it. Unpredictability is key to success, I think.
Welcome, Voltech! And that's a really interesting title although it doesn't really tell me much about your blog is about. Good inspiration, though!
DeleteI think your name is awesome and it's very catch! Lol @ your easy, breezy, beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI came up with my name because of Horror needs a Queen so....ta da. ^_^
Thanks! Horror does need a queen and you totally took that title -- own it, girl, and keep it up!
DeleteYour blog is perfectly titled. This is a terrific post - and I'm glad I answered your questions - it was fun! Did any of my answers suprise you?
ReplyDeleteAlso - don't worry about being last in Project Terrible - I'm pretty sure I'll be bringing up the rear - I've only watched three of the four movies, and posted about one! Yipe!
Thank you for answering my questions, Craig, I loved your answers. Unfortunately, I did not take down my Pulp Fiction poster to make room for Poltergeist - I said bye bye to the Kill Bill one. And I've always wanted to see DeNiro in King of Comedy, that seems to be really popular.
DeleteI always loved the title of your blog. Sounds like a Stieg Larsson novel :-)
ReplyDeleteOriginally, my blog was titled "Maynard Morrissey's Horror Movie Reviews" - a lame title which I changed to "Horror Movie Diary" because this blog is like a diary to me.
Horror movies are a huge part of my life. I'm watching horror movies all the time, and write almost daily about them - I think Diary is just the right word.
I think Diary is the perfect word for your blog because you watch so many movies and post so many reviews, it really feels like a diary of your movie-watching experiences.
DeleteI also think the The Girl Who Loves Horror is cool. Perhaps sounds like a Harry Potter story. I really can't remember my thought process for FilmsRruss, other than I write about films and my name is Russ. I guess at some point I though of ToysRus and it just popped into my head!
ReplyDeleteFilmsRruss is very clever, I've always loved that. It doesn't pin you down to any specific genre and you can really talk about a lot of stuff. Great, great title.
DeleteHm, interesting question... :) I hope I don't sound selfish or anything like that, but I love the title of my blog. I think it's unique, memorable and not overly long. {Yours is long, but it's also GREAT)
ReplyDeleteI really wanted to include the word cinema in the title, and because I think cinema is marvellous, I ended up with.. CineMarvelous! - a hybrid word with an exclamation mark in the end, and with a double L, because in the UK they spell it with double L and I've learned British English in school. LOL.
Don't feel selfish -- you should love your title because it is awesome. And your banner is so eye-catching and creative as well so it all works for you and what you do on your blog.

ReplyDeleteBeats me, but he clearly managed it.
DeleteMy blog is over four years old and at this point, I honestly can't recall any if the other titles I toyed with. I think I may have thought of Hadden's Horror, but that was a bit too prosaic. I'm quite happy with Fascination with Fear because it allows me to write about anything scary...kind of a broad subject.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love your blog title: simple and straight to the point!
Mine was The Screaming Goregasm. It just kind of popped into my head when I decided to start the blog, and I absolutely loved it. I still love it. Unfortunately, I'd been told by a couple of people that the title scared them (thought it was porn, I guess), so I figured I should change it to something less worrisome. Jenny's House of Horrors is okay, I guess. Just something I settled on when I couldn't think of anything else.
ReplyDeletewell, let see: "Red and Sticky" was the original name of my blog, quoting it from an anonymous reviewer who called the slasher sub-genre "all things red and sticky", but I wanted to make it sound more sophisticated, so this is where The word "compendium" popped out of my head the moment I realized my blog's gonna be a collection of movie reviews filled with bodycounts (for the most time).
ReplyDeleteNothing big from my part, though I did learned how to make it work...I think.
