He is rescue...Yes, Paul Toombes survived the fire. He is rescued in his death duel by Faye, as you know. The corpse of Flay is fed to Faye's well trained spiders, who devour it. We next see Toombes seated at a makeup table, making himself up to look like Flay. The joke about red herrings is cute but doesn't work. I think the film is best seen as an indirect follow up to the two Dr. Phibes films, but the campiness is inconsistent. The direction didn't seem to know what it wanted, it seems to me, so the ending is all over the map. But Madhouse does feature some quality performances from Price and Cushing, and I suppose that's all we get. His old ...To Anonymous: Yes, he survived the fire. His old friend Flay has been devoured by a peculiar flesh devouring spider one would suppose Fay was breeding. A very silly character but fun. He has made himself up to look like Flay, and hence will continue to be Dr. Death. The joke about the red herrings I think is the director's apology for the way this story meanders. But what I think we're looking at here is an indirect follow up to the two Dr. Phibes films, with their high camp and people devouring locusts. Madhouse is not a good film, but it has some good Price and Cushing in it. Still, you had me at "giallo" and bodycount (and with you telling me about the supernatural, I guess I know what to expect now...least in a way!)Kaijinuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11481843593274086819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-29315433468439506192014-08-15T18:03:42.517-05:002014-08-15T18:03:42.517-05:00I'm one of the biggest VP fans, and Peter as w...I'm one of the biggest VP fans, and Peter as well, but, well..... Madhouse does the one thing that will fail with me. It doesn't hold my attention. It just seems to lack focus for me. I tried last year to watch it, but no, it didn't make me want to stay.memorymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13070855632402849956noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-23701884934302818942014-08-15T14:10:45.546-05:002014-08-15T14:10:45.546-05:00Admittedly, 'Madhouse' is weaker than the ...Admittedly, 'Madhouse' is weaker than the film bundled with it by MGM- Theatre of Blood.

That said it is chock full of silly and strange goodness.
