Point taken. Perhaps I could have worded ...Bryant,

Point taken. Perhaps I could have worded that a little better, because I didn't mean to imply I didn't think there was ANY dropoff in quality. My personal view is that there WAS a dip, but it was neither as clearly defined or as pronounced as most people claim. And while I probably shouldn't nitpick over words when my own selection was so poor in my previous comment, I certainly can't agree with you that the decline was "a fact". A fact can be either proven or dis-proven. In art, everything is obviously subjective. A critical consensus shouldn't be confused with unanimity, much less a fact. Overall, though, I think we're on the same page here with regard to Carpenter's career arc.-Louhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08616514371525212419noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-43291962096598349792011-06-11T18:45:32.101-05:002011-06-11T18:45:32.101-05:00Bleaux Leaux:

Sure, most of what he's made during that decline is still worth seeing for people who enjoy his work, or the genre as a whole. But to suggest there is no decline at all from the period that brought us movies like "The Thing," "Big Trouble In Little China," and "Prince of Darkness" ... sorry, but I can't stick with you there. There WAS a decline; a huge one, in fact, and it has not ended thus far.

But I agree that Carpenter's work during that decline has still been mostly worthwhile, to one degree or another.Bryant Burnettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01189356171455609865noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-58296369491092189332011-06-11T11:13:27.699-05:002011-06-11T11:13:27.699-05:00The thing about Carpenter's alleged "decl...The thing about Carpenter's alleged "decline" is that people who take that view sort of ignore the fact that the greats always have a "peak period" followed by a another period during which their (sometimes very good) work suffers by comparison. For example, the Rolling Stones have made several very enjoyable albums since their early 70s heyday, but it doesn't matter because it's a universally accepted idea that everything they've done since then sucks. Same deal with Stephen King- everything he does now will forever be compared to his first 6-7 books. That doesn't mean Carpenter doesn't crank out the occasional turkey, but this idea that he doesn't make anything worthwhile anymore is absurd.-Louhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08616514371525212419noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-64472551783526339272011-06-11T08:39:50.946-05:002011-06-11T08:39:50.946-05:00Bryant, just with Regards to Carpenters remake of ...Bryant, just with Regards to Carpenters remake of "Village of the Damned", its mediocre for sure but its still a hundred times better than the ludicrously over-rated British original from 1960.eddie lydeckernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-1046575312170042732011-06-10T20:17:09.229-05:002011-06-10T20:17:09.229-05:00Eddie:

(although the end of that movie is pretty awesome) or "Pro-Life" (even Ron Perlman sucks in that movie!), but the others, definitely.

I actually kinda love "Ghosts of Mars"; it's junk, but it's also fun as hell, and I'd say almost exactly the same thing about "Vampires." I'm fairly middle-of-the-road on "Village of the Damned," but I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as some people claim.

Definitely looking forward to "The Ward." I doubt it'll play in a theatre around here (Tuscaloosa, AL) but I'll absolutely be buying the DVD the day it comes out.Bryant Burnettehttp://www.honkmahfah.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-62574642136951992442011-06-10T11:26:05.954-05:002011-06-10T11:26:05.954-05:00Bryant, i think i would ultimately agree with what...Bryant, i think i would ultimately agree with what you said but i still think that the 5 movies (and the two masters of horror episodes) Carpenter has made in the 16 years since 1995 are all at least reasonably good (and ludicrously under-rated in a couple of instances) and worthy of a few veiwings, that old Carpenter magic is still there in all of them to a certain degree.eddie lydeckernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-66741389295333030012011-06-09T15:34:30.209-05:002011-06-09T15:34:30.209-05:00I love "In the Mouth of Madness." My only real problem with it is that I don't like the score very much at all; it's a decent theme, but the orchestration ruins it.Bryant Burnettehttp://www.honkmahfah.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-36396632260393755182011-06-09T02:07:22.480-05:002011-06-09T02:07:22.480-05:00I recently watched JC's "The Ward" a...I recently watched JC's "The Ward" and I was truly disappointed.
