He's just... hairy, not wolfy. It didn't make not like the movie at all, though, I thought it was great.

I think the movie would have been really cool if it was a more psychological thing, actually. They talk about that a lot in the movie that lycanthropy is believed to be a "disease of the mind" instead people actually turning into wolves. And that angle totally works for what the werewolf is supposed to represent so it's kind of a shame that they didn't get to explore that. Guess Universal just wanted more monsters.

I'm loving Lon! That's cool that he's the only one who played the Wolfman - means he took it seriously at least!Michele (TheGirlWhoLovesHorror)https://www.blogger.com/profile/03309044766117909683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-91272305199954794822012-11-04T16:25:12.417-06:002012-11-04T16:25:12.417-06:00Michele, did you know that Lon Chaney Jr had to dr...Michele, did you know that Lon Chaney Jr had to drink half a bottle of whiskey every time he arrived on set to give him the ability to act and say his lines.Johnny Conchonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7459781420607928525.post-89600053345893207102012-10-30T22:18:08.121-05:002012-10-30T22:18:08.121-05:00Aw, I wish this one had come through a little bett...Aw, I wish this one had come through a little better for you - as the Wolfman is one of my favorites from the Universal Monster Stable. If it interests you - there's a lot written out there about the production of this one - originally planned to be more of a psychological movie - where you never saw a wolfman/werewolf - but watched Larry Talbot battle the inner demons of BELIEVING he was a werewolf. As production wore on Universal pushed the production into the current monster movie that it is - which did not please those involved with it.

I wish you liked the design better - I think it's telling that he's called The WOLFMAN - and not The Werewolf - and I actually believe that your theory is correct - as it is alluded to in the movie - that with each transformation he was moving down the scale to a more wolf-like being - and had he survived thanks to the gypsy lady (no mention of the incredible Maria Ouspenskaya here? I thought you'd like her a lot. By the way - bragging here - I can not only spell her name correctly without looking it up - I can say it correctly too! I am a geek!) for as many years as Bela did - he too would have been a completely wolf like being when transformed.

The Wolfman returns in three more series entries (Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, House of Frankenstein, and House of Dracula) - then finishes out his run in the very funny Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein - all of which are recommended, particularly as the later monster rally movies do go more for the camp that you mention. Unlike the other Universal monsters - he is never played by anyone than Lon - who called him "my baby" and was very protective of his lycanthropic alter ego. Lon also rates a special mention as the only actor in the bunch to play the four major monsters - The Wolfman, Dracula, The Frankenstein Monster, and The Mummy!
